High micro precision with two options – AMB 2022 - PES Media

At AMB 2022, Kern is presenting two machines – both capable of creating high precision workpieces, but based on two completely different technologies.

The machines on show will include Kern’s latest generation of its 5-axis machining centre – the Kern Micro HD and its modern laser machining centre the Femto E3.

The Kern Micro HD will be machining form inserts for filter housings that are milled and ground in a single setting. This means that the parts are first machined and then further processed to produce excellent surface finish quality at individual points using jig grinding with 5-axis cycles. As a result, the parts achieve a precision of less than 1µm and surface qualities in the single-digit nanometre range on various contact surfaces. This negates the need for manual polishing.

Also working live on the stand will be the Kern Femto E3 laser machining centre which has proven to be an ideal manufacturing solution for sintered carbide press dies and similar parts. The machine uses an ultra-short pulse laser to process hard materials with the highest dimensional accuracy of ±3µm and without heat input.

Since the laser is not subject to wear, there are no tool costs. With surface qualities of up to Ra 0.2µm, this new Kern technology is highly productive and extremely stable. Kern claims, when compared to EDM processes production time can be cut by 75%.

The Kern stand will also be of interest to visitors requiring textured surfaces because the Femto E3 can undertake this work quickly and easily on a wide variety of materials.

Kern focuses on two primary business areas, the development and manufacturing of high-precision machining centres and the contract manufacturing of milled parts in the micro and nano range.

Milling centres made by the company are used in the Kern workshop. This enables it to not only manufacture high-precision machines, but also to support its customers with the necessary process knowledge and expertise.

The company’s product portfolio of contract manufacturing includes prototype, single part and series production as well as mounting assemblies and support in the construction phase. The parts are machined by milling, drilling, EDM and grinding.

In the UK, Kern equipment is sold and supported by Rainford Precision.
