Erdwich will present flexible solutions for machining production at EMO.

The recycling specialists at Erdwich Zerkleinerungs-Systeme have designed single and twin-shaft shredders for different tasks depending on space availability and the metallic challenges of material that needs to be removed. The company's portfolio ranges from plants that can be integrated directly into production processes through to stand-alone solutions. At EMO, Erwich will present its single-shaft shredders, M400/1- 400 and M600/1-600, and the M350/2- 410 twin-shaft shredder, which is suitable for highly-demanding swarf shredding jobs.

“It is primarily the volume that poses the greatest problem during storage and further processing of the balls of swarf,” explains Harald Erdwich, company MD. He notes that the space to install the shredding plant is important followed by the material to be shredded. As both operational floor space and swarf are valuable resources, it is thus necessary to find the optimum solution for each application. The applications include small amounts of waste in laboratories, which have to be shredded at intervals, to 24/7 continuous applications in the automotive industry with high-throughput quantities. “The plants can be configured either for pure volume reduction or the perfect breaking-up of materials, so that the metal swarf can be further processed by briquetting or oil separation in a centrifuge,” Erdwich adds.

The company says that its single-shaft shredders are suitable for processing metal swarf that accumulates in everyday operations during machining. They have a special pressure angle to allow for swarf and metal pellets to be drawn in and shredded at the stator by the individually inserted, removable cutter disks on the cutting rotor. The cutters of the M400/1-400 and M600/1-600 single-shaft shredders on exhibit at EMO are made of fully hardened steel and can thus be reground several times to increase service life. Replacing individual cutters quickly is also possible. The size and machine throughput are determined by how the cutters are inserted on the cutting rotor and the individually-perforated sieve geometries. Depending on the type and appearance of the swarf, throughputs range from 70 to 1,650 kg/h using the single-shaft shredders.

Thanks to their higher cutting force, twin-shaft shredders like the M350/2-410 are suitable for shredding larger quantities of swarf or swarf with large cross-sections. “Twin-shaft machines are also better suited for continuous throughputs of large volumes and quantities of up to 4,000 kg/h,” Erdwich says. The higher-throughput capacity is achieved, thanks to the narrow cutting gaps, which guarantee reliable shredding without jamming effects, the company claims. Depending on the material, the cutting-gear geometry of the twin-shaft shredders can also be configured using adapted blade shapes and individual cutter insertion options on the hexagonal shafts. With the variable cutting gear, optimum feeding behaviour is generated for each material to achieve high performance. In addition, a specially developed stripping system with a self-cleaning effect ensures that metal swarf does not wrap itself around the shaft to overcome interrupting operations to remove swarf.

All single and twin-shaft shredders from Erdwich have PLC controls with automatic reverse and cut-out control to protect them from damage caused by overload or massive parts.
